CHOICES,
a Comprensive Perinatal
Substance Abuse Tratment Center for pregnant and parenting mothers and
their children, began in May, 1994, through a contract with the
Department of Children and Family Services. This program targets
pregnant women and mothers who are abusing alcohol and/or drugs and who
are at high risk, and their children.
This program provides structured
activities for the participant and is
designed to provide them with the motivation, knowledge and skills
needed to overcome alcohol and drug addiction and abuse. In addition,
the program provides skills needed to assist the participants in
becoming more capable caregivers for their children. A
comprehensive array of services
are provided to the women to assist them in abstaining from the use of
alcohol and drugs and early intervention services to their children to
help them develop in a sound and normal manner. Services include intake
and assessment, diagnosis and evaluation, individual and group
counseling, peer support groups, drug education, relapse prevention
groups, domestic violence education, parenting skills education and
training, on- and off-site child care, nutritional counseling, health
screening, random drug testing, transportation services, counseling
services to family members and significant others, HIV/AIDS education
and discharge planning. Funding for these services is provided by the
Los Angeles County Department of Health Services Alcohol and Drug
